Background:
α-Catenin, β-catenin, γ-catenin, and p120-catenin are members of the catenin family and mediate intercellular adhesion together with E-cadherin. P120-catenin binds to the near-membrane region of E-cadherin to form a stable, tightly associated complex. In lobular breast cancer, E-cadherin deficiency leads to the accumulation of p120-catenin in the cytoplasm, whereas in ductal breast cancer, p120-catenin levels at the membrane decrease, with no significant accumulation in the cytoplasm. Therefore, this pattern can be used to differentiate lobular carcinoma from ductal carcinoma. Studies have demonstrated that cytoplasmic p120-catenin in gastric and colorectal cancers correlates with impaired cell adhesion.
