Neuroscience also endeavors to elucidate the biological foundations of emotional life, investigating how emotions color our thoughts and why disruptions in the regulation of emotion, thought, and action give rise to conditions such as depression, mania, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. These are exceedingly complex questions, far more intricate than anything encountered in other areas of biology.
